School of Cosmetology
In the School of Cosmetology students will gain training and exposure to the critical areas of the cosmetology profession. Providing students a wide array of academic options that include college preparatory, honors, and concurrent college/high school classes. This program prepares students for post-secondary education and/or entry
careers in the cosmetology. GCIT offers an extensive range of extracurricular opportunities such as athletics, clubs, competitions, and organizations that center on their career theme.
 
By graduation, students will have earned their high school diploma, logged the required training hours, and are prepared to take the state cosmetology licensing exam.
 
  • Students in the School Cosmetology spend two hours of their day concentrating on their career theme.
  • Students receive their clinical experience in our campus hair salon located within the state‐of‐the‐ art GCIT school facility. GCIT has formed a partnership with the prestigious Goldwell Company that allows our students to benefit from highly respected Goldwell training programs.
  • GCIT has formed partnerships with area businesses who lend expert guidance and afford employment opportunities to our students.
  • According to New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development, in 2006 there were 33,400 Cosmetologists and Barbers employed in NJ. By the year 2016 the employment growth projected is 37,900.
  • In 2009 students in the School of Cosmetology who competed in SkillsUSA Competitions for Cosmetology and its related areas received 12 medals at the State Level and 5 medals at the National Level.
  • The School invites many guest educators to come in and share their knowledge and expertise with our students to enhance their training and readiness for the Cosmetology Industry.
  • The School of Cosmetology required our students to complete 1,440 hours of study; the State Board requires 1,000 hours ‐ 500 hours of theory and 500 hours of hands‐on experience. After reaching 600 hours of study, students receive a permit to work on clients in our school salon or in any professional salon.
  • At the end of their senior year, students have not only earned their high school diplomas; they have logged the required training hours and are prepared to take their state board of cosmetology licensing exam.
  • GCIT’s School of Cosmetology offers our students the opportunity to study for a range of careers in the cosmetology profession including hairstylist, nail technician, and esthetician. During their four years of study, students will learn all critical areas of the cosmetology field.
